Assia, 2: Father Charged with Child Daughter Sex Abuse and Killing

The formal prosecution of a 31-year-old man accused of the murder and aggravated sexual abuse of his toddler daughter has moved to the Crown Court, establishing a concrete trial framework.

Kevin Kerjean, a French national born in the Central African Republic, appeared before Guildford Crown Court. The defendant spoke only through an interpreter to confirm his identity, spending much of the hearing with his hand over his face.

The Crown Prosecution Service has formally identified the two-year-old victim as Assia Kerjean. Surrey Police explicitly confirmed the direct relationship, stating: "We can confirm that the victim was the daughter of Kevin Kerjean."

The emergency response originally unfolded at approximately 17:40 BST on Thursday, 25 June, when emergency services were dispatched to a property on Pyrcroft Road in Chertsey following reports of a concern for safety. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of the two-year-old girl. Kerjean was detained at the scene, where he was initially treated for a serious injury.

The operational parameters of the investigation, codenamed Operation Northwall, have systematically dismantled early public misdirections. While widespread online rumours suggested the incident took place within an asylum seeker House in Multiple Occupation (HMO), Surrey Police formally classified those assertions as incorrect. Home Office records verified that Kerjean legally entered the UK and applied for European Union Settled Status (EUSS) in December 2020. He was granted leave to remain in March 2021, later receiving an extension valid until March 2031.

Judge Patricia Lees ordered that the defendant remain remanded in custody. A formal pre-trial preparation hearing has been set for 14 September 2026 at Guildford Crown Court. Furthermore, a provisional three-week trial date has been positioned for 4 January 2027.

Public tributes have continued to accumulate near the perimeter of the active investigation. Multiple bouquets of flowers, alongside handwritten notes, remain placed by grieving members of the local community at the entrance to Syward Place, situated at the junction of Pyrcroft Road and Bell Bridge Road.

In an updated address, Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen expressed the force's condolences, stating: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the child's mother and extended family, as well as all those who knew her.” He reaffirmed that a dedicated police presence will remain stationed along Pyrcroft Road to assist the Major Crime Team as forensics complete their final site assessments.
