A Lincoln man, Mohammed Ali, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after admitting to a brutal campaign of violence against his new wife, who had recently arrived in the UK from Bangladesh.
The 35-year-old Sylheti men, of High Street, Lincoln, pleaded guilty to two charges of controlling and coercive behaviour and criminal damage, following a series of assaults that took place between January 2024 and May 2025.
Lincoln Crown Court heard harrowing details of the abuse. Prosecutor Alice Ibbotson stated the victim was "repeatedly hit and then kicked like a football."
The violence included Ali dragging his victim by her feet, repeatedly slapping her, and threatening her with a large stick. Miss Ibbotson also revealed that Ali had left red marks on his wife’s throat after grabbing her neck and had thrown her mobile phone against a wall.
Recorder James Bide-Thomas, in passing sentence, told Ali that his wife "was isolated and dependent on him." The judge noted that Ali had threatened to send her back to Bangladesh and became "angry and violent" when she gained employment, as he did not approve.
The court heard that Ali has a history of domestic violence, having been sentenced to a 12-month community order in 2015 for offences against his previous wife.
Paul O'Shea, mitigating for Ali, told the court that his client had been remanded into custody since May and had subsequently lost his home. Mr. O'Shea also stated that Ali's "well established business in the area" was now "hanging by its fingernails."
In addition to the custodial sentence, a restraining order has been put in place, preventing Ali from having any contact with his ex-wife for a period of 10 years.
