A 33-year-old British Bangladeshi man from Tower Hamlets has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged in connection with a fatal collision in Stepney Green that has claimed the life of a cyclist.

Parvez Ahmed Rahman, residing in the East London borough of Tower Hamlets, appeared before Thames Magistrates' Court on Saturday. Magistrates ordered that Rahman remain in custody ahead of his next scheduled appearance at the Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey, on September 4.

The charges follow a major emergency response on Aylward Street, E1, shortly after 11:00 pm on Thursday, August 6. Metropolitan Police officers and specialist paramedics from London's Air Ambulance trauma team were dispatched to the location following reports of a vehicle striking a cyclist. A video circulating on social media platforms appears to depict a high-speed collision involving a car and a cyclist on the residential street.

The victim, now formally identified by the Metropolitan Police as 51-year-old Chris Powell, sustained catastrophic injuries and was rushed to a major trauma centre under blue lights. Despite medical intervention, police confirmed that Mr Powell tragically passed away in hospital on Sunday. His next-of-kin are currently being supported by specialist family liaison officers.

Investigating officers from the Metropolitan Police subsequently arrested Rahman and formally charged him with attempted murder and failing to stop after a road collision.

In an official statement released via the Evening Standard, Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts remain with Christopher's family and friends at this extremely difficult time. As we try to build up a full picture of the incident, we are appealing to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information — particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage."

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service previously stated: "We were called at 11:16pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Aylward Street, E1. We sent ambulance crews and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London's Air Ambulance. We treated a patient at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority by road."

The case now transitions to the Old Bailey in September as detectives continue gathering physical evidence, street CCTV, and witness testimony along Aylward Street. Anyone with information or relevant footage is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police on 101, quoting CAD 8767/06 AUG26.
