A twenty-year-old forensic science student has pleaded guilty to the murder of twenty-four-year-old Maria Saceanu after luring her to a plastic-lined room in a West Midlands Airbnb and inflicting dozens of fatal stab wounds. Benjamin Day dramatically changed his plea on the second day of his trial at court, formally admitting to the killing after previously asserting that he had acted in self-defence during an impromptu social media filming project. The admission brought a swift end to criminal proceedings that had exposed how the defendant prepared the premises in homage to the American crime drama Dexter before attacking the victim within minutes of her arrival.

Miss Saceanu, who had been working as an escort after moving to Tividale from London, was contacted by Day via a burner telephone on the evening of 20 December. She arrived at the three-bedroom, forty-pound-a-night property shortly before half past ten, where investigators determined she was killed almost immediately. Forensic examinations revealed no evidence of sexual contact between the pair, confirming instead that the defendant had pre-arranged the premises using plastic sheeting across the floor, walls, and bed. Miss Saceanu sustained seventy-eight stab wounds during the assault, with a Home Office pathologist concluding that catastrophic injuries to her neck caused her death, alongside multiple defensive lacerations across her hands.

The prosecution established that Day’s elaborate attempts to conceal the killing unravelled within hours of the assault taking place. Having placed the victim’s personal possessions inside a refuse sack for disposal, the defendant attempted to dismember the body using cutting instruments. However, he sustained an extensive hand laceration during the process, forcing him to abandon the scene. After discarding his disposable mobile telephone, Day flagged down a passing West Midlands Police vehicle in the early hours of the morning, falsely informing officers that a stray dog had attacked him.

While Day was receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital, the true nature of events came to light through occupants inside the rented accommodation. A resident occupying an adjacent room discovered a trail of blood leading through the property and alerted the landlord, who immediately contacted emergency services. West Midlands Police officers entered the room to discover Miss Saceanu lying deceased adjacent to the bed. Day was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder from his hospital bed at twenty minutes to four in the morning, while still wearing clothing closely resembling the costume worn by the titular character in the television drama.

Jonathan Roe of the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that the extensive forensic evidence gathered by investigators dismantled the defendant’s claims that Miss Saceanu had initiated the violence. In an official briefing on the outcome, the CPS emphasized that Day had fabricated his account of self-defence to evade responsibility for an act planned to feed a morbid fantasy. By methodically establishing the sequence of events and demonstrating that the victim fought desperately for her life, prosecutors removed any foundation for a contest, leaving the defendant no option other than to enter a guilty plea.

Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that Day, the son of a company director who was nineteen years old and living with his parents at the time of the offence, will remain in custody pending formal sentencing scheduled for December. Legal authorities have indicated that the premeditated nature of the attack, combined with the extensive preparations undertaken prior to the victim's arrival, will form central considerations when determining the minimum term of his life sentence.

Relatives of Miss Saceanu have spoken of their profound devastation following the court proceedings, remembering her as an exceptionally generous individual whose life was ended prematurely. Born in Alexandria within Romania's Teleorman region, Miss Saceanu had lived in the capital before relocating to the West Midlands. She had suffered severe bereavement following the death of her mother in 2023, an event from which she had struggled to recover while continuing to express ambitions of raising a family of her own.

A close cousin told journalists of the intense remorse surrounding Miss Saceanu's final hours, having missed a telephone call from her at eight o'clock on the evening of the murder due to pregnancy-related illness. Her cousin said: "I truly regret that I didn't answer her last call. I wish she was here to meet my baby. I wish I could turn back time to save her life." Expressing the family's enduring sorrow and anger toward the defendant, her relative added: "She wanted to live, to have a family, to become a mother, she was a one in a million girl. All I want is for that despicable person to live 102 years and for him to suffer every year of his life, may he be haunted by regret."
