An official statement from the Cambridge Police regarding the incident has not yet been obtained.
When contacted, an official from the Bangladesh High Commission in London stated that they have not been officially informed about the matter. The police have not contacted them. They learned about the incident from members of the community on Saturday.
Meanwhile, regarding this incident, renowned UK Barrister Nashid Rahman told the Daily Dazzling Dawn reporter early Sunday morning, "Almost every time Sheikh Hasina has visited, cases have been filed for misconduct or criminal offenses alongside political protests. However, very few people have been sentenced by the courts following these cases. In Hasnat's incident, complaints have been made by both parties. An ABH (Actual Bodily Harm) charge could apply in this scenario. It will be examined whether there is evidence and witnesses of physical injury. Then, after a report with evidence is submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, they will verify whether the case has merit. CCTV footage, eyewitnesses, and testimonies from pedestrians or drivers on the road will be taken."
In response to a question about whether Hasnat Abdullah could face punishment or what kind of punishment it could be, he said, "Firstly, he has not been arrested. From what I have seen of the incident on social media, it did not appear to be a planned event. If an incident occurs due to a coincidental confrontation on the road, the likelihood of punishment based on evidence after a police charge or a court case is very low." In response to another question, he said, "Even if Hasnat did strike, it will be examined whether Hasnat had any prior plan to strike him at all, or if it occurred due to the suddenness of the event."
In response to another query, Barrister Nashid Rahman said, "Not just Hasnat Abdullah, but if anyone visiting Britain on a visit visa is proven to have committed a criminal offense, their chances of obtaining a visa in the future will drop to zero."
He added, "This incident is a negative development for the Bangladeshi community. In light of the racist attacks on the homes of people of Bangladeshi descent in Belfast, the British-Bangladeshi community needs to stand united, but this incident represents the exact opposite. Such incidents will have a long-term negative impact on the British Bangladeshi community."
Bangladeshi politician Md. Abul Hasnat Abdullah now serves as an MP for Comilla-4 in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
