  • Social Media Misidentifies London Event Attendee as War Criminal Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin; Individual Confirmed as Barrister Ataur Rahman

Rumors circulating on social media misidentifying an attendee at a reception in London yesterday monday as convicted war criminal Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin have been confirmed as entirely false.

According to multiple attendees, eyewitnesses, and the individual in question, the man pictured in the viral social media posts is not Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin. Instead, he has been identified as Barrister Ataur Rahman, a Bangladeshi lawyer residing in the UK.

The event, hosted by the UK branch of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in East London on Sunday, was attended by Barrister Ataur Rahman, who also delivered a speech. He is clearly visible in various photographs and video footage captured at the venue.

Commenting on the matter, Barrister Nazir Ahmed, a prominent UK lawyer who attended the event, stated:

"The claims circulating on social media are completely inaccurate. The individual being misidentified is not Mueen-Uddin; he is Barrister Ataur Rahman. I was seated right next to him, and he spoke at the event."

Taysir Mahmud, Vice President of the London Bangla Press Club, echoed this clarification. Speaking to this reporter, he said:

"The claim that Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin was present at the event is entirely baseless. I can state with absolute certainty that he was not there."

When contacted for comment, Barrister Ataur Rahman expressed his frustration with the online rumors:

"If people cannot correctly identify individuals, I have very little to say. I have lived in the UK for a long time, providing legal services to immigrants and advocating for the rights of the people of Sylhet. That is precisely why I attended the event featuring Hasnat Abdullah—to discuss issues concerning Sylhet with him."

Several social media posts had used photographs from the event to falsely claim that the attendee was the fugitive war criminal. However, statements from eyewitnesses, event attendees, and the individual himself offer zero evidence to support the online allegations.

Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin was convicted by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal for his involvement in the killing of intellectuals during the 1971 Liberation War. According to consecutive statements from the Bangladesh government, he currently remains a fugitive.
