People receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) have been reminded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that failing to report certain changes in circumstances could lead to payments being paused, reduced, or stopped altogether.
The warning comes as many claimants prepare for holidays and travel abroad this year. According to official government guidance, anyone planning to leave the UK for more than four weeks — even for a holiday — must inform the DWP immediately.

Claimants are advised to contact the PIP enquiry line and provide details including the date of travel, the country they are visiting, how long they will be away, and the reason for the trip. Failure to report extended time abroad could affect entitlement to the benefit.
The DWP also stressed that changes in a claimant’s health condition or mobility needs must be reported. This includes situations where a person requires more or less support than previously stated, or if their condition is expected to last for a different length of time. Such updates could affect both the amount and duration of PIP payments.
Under current rules, PIP payments may also be affected by hospital stays, care home residency, imprisonment, or legal custody. Both components of PIP usually stop after 28 days in an NHS hospital, while the daily living component can also stop after 28 days in a publicly funded care home. However, privately funded patients and self-funded care home residents are generally exempt from these restrictions.
The DWP further explained that claimants taken into legal custody may lose entitlement to PIP after 28 days, regardless of whether they have been convicted or are awaiting trial.
Some changes, however, will not affect eligibility or payment amounts. These include changing a name, address, doctor, or healthcare professional. Even so, claimants are encouraged to keep their information updated so the DWP can maintain accurate records and ensure payments continue without disruption.
Anyone needing to report a change in circumstances can contact the PIP enquiry line on weekdays between 9am and 5pm.
Full guidance regarding PIP changes of circumstance is available on the official GOV.UK website.
