Three people have died following a serious two-vehicle collision in Northumberland, with police appealing for witnesses as investigations continue.
The crash happened at around 2:30pm on Thursday on the A1 between Denwick and South Charlton, according to Northumbria Police.
Police said a silver Volkswagen Polo travelling northbound collided with a red Hyundai i20 moving in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 80s, and a female passenger in her 70s were pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman in her 60s travelling as a passenger in the Volkswagen Polo also died at the scene.
The Polo driver, a man in his 60s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police confirmed relatives of those travelling in the Polo have been informed and are receiving support, while efforts continue to contact the family of those travelling in the Hyundai.
Steven Clare described the collision as an “incredibly tragic incident” and said officers remain focused on finding answers for the families involved.
The road was closed for around seven hours following the crash before later reopening.
Officers from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, stopped to help at the scene, or may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward.
Investigators believe footage from motorists travelling along the route could provide important information.
