  • Investigation Intensifies Following Fatal Stabbing of 16-Year-Old Chloe Watson Dransfield

  • Police continue witness appeals as three defendants remain in custody ahead of Crown Court date

The legal proceedings surrounding the death of Chloe Watson Dransfield have entered a critical phase following the formal opening of an inquest into the 16-year-old’s passing.

Chloe, a resident of Gomersal described by her family as a "beautiful princess" and a "loyal, honest" sister, died shortly after being found with serious injuries on Kennerleigh Avenue, Austhorpe. Officers were called to the residential street at 5:55 a.m. on March 28, 2026. An inquest held on April 9 has since confirmed the provisional cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.

The judicial process is currently focused on three primary defendants. Kayla Smith, 18, of Kennerleigh Avenue, Archie Rycroft, 19, of Middleton Park Road, and a 17-year-old male who cannot be named for legal reasons, have all been charged with murder. They appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court and have been remanded in custody. A provisional trial date has been set for November 10, 2026, with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for May 1 at Leeds Crown Court.

The investigation remains expansive, involving several other individuals. Beyond the three charged, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed additional arrests:

  • An 18-year-old man who remains in custody as of early April.
  • An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl who have been released on conditional bail.
  • A 14-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of murder, also released on bail pending further inquiries.

Detectives are working to establish the full timeline of events leading up to the 5:55 a.m. emergency call. While various reports suggest the incident may have followed a gathering in the Austhorpe area, police are still seeking witnesses who can provide a definitive account of the hours preceding the discovery on Kennerleigh Avenue.

The Senior Investigating Officer has emphasized that the inquiry is very much ongoing. The force is specifically appealing to anyone who may have witnessed a disturbance in the area or who possesses mobile phone footage, dashcam recordings, or CCTV from the vicinity of Kennerleigh Avenue between 3:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on March 28.

"Our thoughts remain with Chloe’s family at this incredibly difficult time," a spokesperson for the force told journalists. They urged the public to refrain from speculation on social media to avoid prejudicing the ongoing legal proceedings.

Members of the community in Gomersal and Austhorpe continue to leave floral tributes at the scene, reflecting the profound impact the loss of the popular teenager has had on the region.
