Prince Harry Named as Defendant in High Court Defamation Claim by Sentebale

The High Court in London has formally recorded a defamation claim naming Prince Harry as the defendant, marking a significant escalation in the fracturing relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the charity he co-founded two decades ago, Daily Dazzling Dawn confirmed.

Sentebale, established in 2006 to support vulnerable children in Southern Africa, filed the proceedings as the claimant on 24 March 2026. The legal action follows a period of intense internal friction and the abrupt resignation of both Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho as patrons in March 2025, an exit sparked by a publicised disagreement with the board’s chairperson, Sophie Chandauka. The claim also names Mark Dyer, a former trustee and long-time mentor to the Duke, as a co-defendant.

At the heart of the litigation is the charity’s assertion that a deliberate campaign was orchestrated to undermine its operational integrity. Representatives for Sentebale told journalists that the charity seeks the court's intervention, protection, and restitution following what they described as a coordinated adverse media campaign conducted since 25 March 2025. They further stated that the campaign caused significant operational disruption and reputational harm to the charity, its leadership, and its strategic partners.

The charity’s executive team identified the defendants as the architects of these narratives, which they claim triggered a wave of digital hostility. They told journalists that the proceedings were brought against Prince Harry and Mark Dyer, identified through evidence as the architects of that campaign, which had a significant viral impact and triggered an onslaught of cyber-bullying directed at the charity and its leadership. To protect its mission, the charity confirmed it is using external funding, rather than charitable donations, to pursue the legal fees for this case.

In response to the filing, the legal camp for the Duke and Mr Dyer has moved quickly to dismiss the allegations as meritless. A spokesperson for the pair told journalists that they categorically reject these offensive and damaging claims.

The dispute reportedly began as early as 2023, originating from disagreements regarding a new fundraising strategy aimed at the United States market. Notably, a 2025 Charity Commission inquiry into the matter found no evidence of systemic bullying by the Duke; however, the regulator was critical of the broader conflict. Commission CEO David Holdsworth told journalists that both sides allowed the rift to harm the charity's reputation, jeopardising its ability to deliver for the beneficiaries it was created to serve.

The next phase of this conflict will involve the "Particulars of Claim," which will outline the specific statements or publications Sentebale alleges to be defamatory. Legal experts suggest that the case will hinge on whether the defendants can prove the truth of their assertions or if they were acting in the public interest. As the court prepares to hear the arguments, the focus shifts to the potential for a settlement or a high-profile trial that could force the disclosure of private communications between the Duke and the charity's executive board.
