The Bangladeshi community across Ireland will gather in Dublin today to bid a final, tearful farewell to Dr. Mahbuba Akhter Hossain, the 55-year-old physician whose life was tragically cut short in Monday’s dawn horror on the N15, Daily Dazzling Dawn realised.
In a poignant development that has added a fresh layer of heartbreak to the tragedy, it has emerged that Dr. Mahbuba was a cancer survivor. Close friends revealed that she had spent several years bravely fighting the illness—a battle that had kept her away from her medical practice—and was in remission at the time of the collision. Having conquered a life-threatening disease, her sudden death while returning from a holy Ramadan meal has left her colleagues and the diaspora in profound shock.

Funeral Arrangements Confirmed-Following the completion of the post-mortem, the community has confirmed that Dr. Mahbuba will be laid to rest in her adopted home of Ireland. Her Janazah (funeral prayer) is scheduled to take place today, Wednesday, at 13:00 hrs, immediately following the Zuhr prayer.
The service will be held at the Clonskeagh Mosque (Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland):
Address: 19 Roebuck Rd, Roebuck, Dublin 14, D14 YD91.
A Community in Vigil-While the community prepares for the funeral, eyes remain fixed on Sligo University Hospital, where her husband, Dr. Faruk Hossain, continues his own battle for survival. The senior Letterkenny University Hospital medic remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
The couple’s two sons, Talha Zubair (22) and Mosahib Hossain (16), are stable and recovering from physical injuries, though they now face the monumental task of burying their mother while their father remains incapacitated.
From Dhaka to Donegal: A Legacy of Resilience-Dr. Mahbuba’s journey was one of service and resilience. From her roots in Baluchar, Munshiganj, to years of medical service in the Middle East and her eventual move to Donegal four years ago, she was a pillar of the Bangladeshi medical diaspora. Her battle with cancer was known to those close to her as a testament to her strength—a strength her sons are now forced to emulate.

The family was returning to Letterkenny after a Suhoor (pre-fast meal) in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, when their vehicle left the road at Grellagh, Castlegal, at approximately 3:30 AM.
As the Bangladeshi community gathers at Roebuck Road today, the outpouring of support continues to grow. A local fundraiser has now surpassed €25,000, reflecting the deep respect held for a family that spent their lives healing others, only to be struck by tragedy during their most sacred month.
