Tarique Rahman Elected Bangladesh Prime Minister
  • Bangladesh got a male Prime Minister again after approximately 35 years.

Tarique Rahman was unanimously elected as Leader of the House and Prime Minister on Tuesday after his party secured an absolute majority in Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament election, marking a significant political transition in the South Asian nation.

The decision was taken during a parliamentary party meeting of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), held shortly after newly elected lawmakers were sworn in at the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat in Dhaka. The oath was administered by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin in a ceremony attended by both domestic and international guests.

Rahman’s election follows a decisive victory for the BNP, strengthening his mandate to lead the country at a time of political restructuring and economic recovery efforts.

Later in the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin is scheduled to administer the formal oath of office to Rahman and his new cabinet at a special ceremony at the South Plaza of the parliament complex. An official gazette notification outlining ministerial portfolios is expected to be issued by the Cabinet Division in the evening.

In his remarks to party lawmakers, senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed highlighted the party’s position on constitutional reform, signaling potential institutional changes under the new administration.

Rahman’s rise to the premiership reflects a broader political shift in Bangladesh, where voters delivered a clear mandate in favor of the BNP. The new government now faces the challenge of stabilizing the economy, strengthening democratic institutions, and addressing political divisions after months of uncertainty.
