Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is preparing to unveil a significant new agreement with the European Union, coinciding with a major summit in London on Monday. Attendees will include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

Starmer described the upcoming deal as "another step forward," promising additional benefits for the UK and a stronger partnership with the EU. As negotiations continue down to the wire, here’s what the proposed deal could entail:

1. Faster Passport Control for British Travellers

Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds confirmed that the UK is advocating for measures to reduce wait times for British tourists at EU passport control. Negotiators are reportedly close to a deal that would allow British travellers to use e-gates at European airports, currently reserved for EU and EEA nationals.

2. Youth Mobility Scheme

Starmer hinted at the possibility of a youth mobility scheme allowing young people from the UK and EU to live and work in each other's territories for a limited period. While Labour maintains that this is not a return to freedom of movement, opposition parties argue it could lead to increased immigration.

3. Access to EU Defence Fund

Negotiations may also include a deal granting the UK access to a £126bn EU defence fund. This would support British defence companies and align UK-EU security efforts. However, disputes over fishing rights and youth mobility may complicate discussions.

4. Food and Drink Export Agreement

The UK government is pushing for a deal to streamline food and drink exports to the EU. Thomas-Symonds noted that current red tape has caused delays, resulting in perishable goods going to waste. The proposed agreement aims to reduce bureaucracy and lower costs for UK exporters.

The government remains optimistic about finalising the deal, but key details are still under negotiation.
