Labour MP Tahir Ali is currently under investigation by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) over concerns related to his office, travel, and accommodation expenditures. IPSA released a statement confirming that its Compliance Officer has launched an inquiry to assess whether Ali breached any rules under the MPs’ Staffing and Business Costs Scheme. The probe specifically examines claims made for office expenses, travel, and accommodation, although details about which specific claims are in question remain undisclosed pending the investigation's outcome.
During the 2023–2024 fiscal year, Ali claimed over £59,000 in expenses. This includes £12,651.77 for accommodation, £9,850.54 for travel, £685.20 for dependant’s travel, £35,691.63 for office costs, and £326.33 for staff travel, excluding staffing wages.
Ali, who has represented Birmingham Hall Green and Moseley since 2019, has also attracted criticism for advocating for a new airport in Mirpur, a region in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. He and 19 other MPs argued that the absence of an airport in the area creates major inconvenience for constituents, who must travel over three hours to access the nearest airport in Pakistan.
Previously, in April 2020, Ali received a formal warning from police for breaching Covid-19 restrictions by attending a large funeral gathering with around 100 people.
He initially won his seat as a Labour candidate after the former MP, Roger Godsiff, was deselected due to controversy surrounding his stance on protests against LGBTQ+ inclusive education in local schools.
