An overturned lorry carrying bread and other baked goods has caused major disruption on the A1(M) near Bowburn, south of Durham, after its load spilled across both carriageways.

The incident happened at about 05:14 GMT, according to Durham Police, prompting the closure of all lanes between junctions 60 and 61.

The heavy goods vehicle, operated by bakery company Warburtons, overturned and damaged the central reservation barrier, scattering baked goods across the motorway and creating difficulties for passing motorists.

Durham Police confirmed that the lorry driver was taken to hospital following the incident. Further details about the driver's condition were not provided in the initial report.

Emergency crews were working to clear the overturned vehicle, remove debris and make the affected sections of the road safe.

The crash caused significant disruption as authorities managed the scene and arranged for the damaged vehicle and spilled goods to be removed.

The northbound carriageway remained fully closed between Bowburn and Carville Interchange, while southbound traffic was restricted to the hard shoulder, according to the report.

Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys while recovery work continued.

The closures were expected to cause delays for commuters and other motorists travelling through the area.

The incident highlights the disruption that overturned heavy goods vehicles can cause on busy motorways, particularly when debris spreads across multiple lanes.

Motorists were urged to follow traffic updates and comply with instructions from emergency services while crews worked to reopen the affected sections.

The circumstances leading to the lorry overturning had not been confirmed in the initial report.
