A civilian-contracted charter aircraft crashed near a remote radar facility in western Alaska on Thursday, killing all eight people aboard, according to US federal aviation and military officials.
The Cessna 441 went down near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport at around 12:15pm local time on August 20, after departing from Anchorage and travelling towards Cape Newenham, roughly 450 miles west of Anchorage.
The aircraft was carrying two pilots and six passengers, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Search-and-rescue teams later confirmed that there were no survivors.
Cape Newenham is a remote military radar installation on Alaska's western coast. Access to the facility is restricted, with the airport generally used by military and approved charter aircraft.
The Alaskan Command said the aircraft was operating under a civilian contract and was travelling to the remote facility when it crashed. The command expressed its condolences to the victims' families and praised the personnel involved in the search and recovery operation.
“This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,” US Air Force Lt Gen Robert Davis said, describing those on board as dedicated professionals carrying out an important mission in a challenging environment.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Officials have not indicated whether weather, mechanical problems, pilot error or other factors played a role.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NTSB are investigating the accident, with the NTSB taking the lead. Officials have stressed that the information available at this stage remains preliminary.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims. The identities are expected to be made public after their next of kin have been notified.
The crash has drawn attention to the extreme remoteness of Cape Newenham, where aviation provides an important link to the radar facility and its personnel.
