Thetford Disorder Probe Widens as Further Arrests Made

Police investigations into last week's disorder in Thetford are entering a new phase, with officers continuing to analyse video evidence and pursue those suspected of involvement in violence directed at emergency workers and public order incidents. Authorities have indicated that further arrests are likely as inquiries progress, while an enhanced police presence remains in place across the Norfolk market town.

The latest developments follow three consecutive nights of unrest that drew significant attention across the region. The disturbances centred on properties believed by demonstrators to be linked to asylum seeker accommodation, prompting a substantial policing operation and the introduction of additional powers aimed at maintaining public safety.

Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that two additional arrests were carried out on Sunday as detectives intensified efforts to identify individuals suspected of criminal offences during the disorder. A teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries until 4 October.

A second suspect, a man in his 20s, was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, alongside allegations relating to the possession of Class A and Class B drugs. He was taken into custody for questioning and remained detained while investigations continued.

The arrests bring the total number of people detained in connection with the disorder to 15 since tensions first escalated last week.

Senior officers have made clear that the investigation remains active and that extensive reviews of available footage are continuing. Speaking to journalists, Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall said: "Our officers continue to review footage from previous disorder in Thetford as part of ongoing efforts to identify those responsible for committing offences.

"We will be exploring all investigative opportunities available to us, and as this work progresses, people should expect further arrests.

"We will maintain an increased visible policing presence in the days ahead, and we hope the peaceful scenes witnessed over the last two nights will continue."

He added: "I would like to thank the vast majority of the public who have helped to maintain calm and order in the town.

"Their support and co-operation have been greatly appreciated as we continue to work to keep our communities safe."

The unrest unfolded across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with large crowds gathering in parts of Thetford amid concerns linked to accommodation for asylum seekers. Witnesses reported hundreds of people assembling near residential properties that protesters believed were housing asylum seekers.

During the height of the disturbances, officers were confronted with significant hostility. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands police personnel were subjected to aggressive behaviour, including reports of officers being struck by a rock, bitten and spat at while attempting to maintain order.

Demonstrations on Wednesday reportedly involved as many as 200 participants. The protests emerged against the backdrop of proposals to convert RAF Barnham in neighbouring Suffolk into accommodation for asylum seekers, an issue that has generated considerable local debate.

Although police have reported that gatherings over recent days have been largely peaceful, authorities are maintaining heightened security measures. Additional policing powers under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 remain active in the town until Tuesday afternoon.

The powers allow officers to direct individuals to leave designated areas if they are involved in, or are considered likely to become involved in, anti-social behaviour. The measure forms part of wider efforts to prevent further disorder and reassure local communities.

In a separate case linked to police activity in the town, 36-year-old Thomas Brown, of Durham Way, Thetford, appeared before Norwich Magistrates' Court on Monday. He pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, driving without insurance and failing to provide a breath test. The court imposed 10 penalty points on his driving licence and a £60 fine.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with relevant information, images or footage to assist officers as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding last week's disorder and identify those responsible for criminal offences.
