Legal proceedings are transitioning to the Central Criminal Court, widely known as the Old Bailey, as a British-Bangladeshi resident from Tower Hamlets faces severe judicial oversight following the death of a cyclist in East London.
Parvez Ahmed Rahman, 33, of Russia Lane, Bethnal Green, was remanded in custody after an initial appearance at Thames Magistrates’ Court on 8th August. The case is scheduled for a pivotal hearing at the Old Bailey on 4th September, where prosecutors are expected to review the formal charges in light of the victim’s passing.
The judicial proceedings stem from a severe collision on Aylward Street, Stepney Green, shortly after 11:00 pm on Thursday, 6th August. Emergency services, including Metropolitan Police officers and specialist paramedics from London’s Air Ambulance trauma unit, attended the scene following reports of a vehicle striking a cyclist at high speed.
The cyclist, formally identified by the Metropolitan Police as 51-year-old Chris Powell, suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed under blue lights to a major trauma centre. Despite extensive medical intervention, Mr Powell succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, 9th August.
Rahman was arrested at the scene and initially charged with attempted murder alongside failing to stop after a road collision. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that Crown prosecutors are currently evaluating the formal indictment ahead of the Old Bailey appearance, with the potential addition of upgraded charges following the fatal outcome.
Detectives leading the investigation continue to compile physical evidence, analyze street-level CCTV, and review dashcam footage to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the impact.
Speaking on the ongoing investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card confirmed that specialist family liaison officers are supporting Mr Powell’s next-of-kin during this difficult period. DCI Card reiterated an urgent appeal for witnesses or anyone holding relevant video footage to come forward to assist the inquiry.
The Metropolitan Police have asked anyone with information to contact 101, quoting reference CAD 8767/06AUG26. The case remains under active judicial consideration ahead of the formal proceedings at the Central Criminal Court next month.
