Police collision investigators are preparing to conduct formal interviews with a heavy goods vehicle driver in the coming days as inquiries deepen into a tragic collision on the A12 near Colchester.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 am on Monday on the northbound carriageway close to Junction 28, near the Colchester United Football Stadium, involving a heavy lorry and a passenger car. A six-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, whilst a second child was taken to hospital with a leg injury where treatment remains ongoing.

Emergency services—including air ambulance personnel, paramedics, and fire crews—attended the scene, prompting a complete closure of both carriageways for approximately seven hours to facilitate emergency response, thorough scene examination, and vehicle recovery.

No arrests were made at the scene. Daily Dazzling Dawn understands that the lorry driver passed all roadside impairment tests following the crash and is fully co-operating with officers.

Lead investigator Detective Inspector Mark Fraser, of the Essex Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, confirmed to journalists that specialist family liaison officers have been assigned to provide comprehensive support to the bereaved family. Daily Dazzling Dawn learned that officers are currently reviewing physical evidence gathered from the scene alongside camera footage to piece together the precise sequence of events leading to the impact.

Authorities have issued an urgent call for any motorists who were travelling along the A12 near Junction 28 around the time of the incident to check dashcam footage. Anyone with relevant information or video clips is urged to contact Essex Police or Crimestoppers anonymously, quoting incident reference 421 of 10 August.
