Daily Dazzling Dawn can reveal that John Godfrey, 45, formerly of Beech Crescent in Castleford, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a comprehensive investigation by Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit. The case, which concluded at Leeds Crown Court on Friday July 31, exposed a catalogue of abuse spanning more than a decade, from the 2010s until 2022.
Victims' Courage Secures Justice
The bravery displayed by the two young victims, both under the age of 13 at the time of the offences, was instrumental in bringing Godfrey to justice. Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Khi Smith, who led the investigation, told journalists: "The victims showed immense courage and resilience throughout this investigation and the court process. Speaking about abuse is never easy, and their strength in coming forward has been instrumental in securing this conviction."
The safeguarding team also acknowledged the vital support provided by the victims' families throughout the legal proceedings.
Detailed Admissions of Guilt
Godfrey initially denied all charges but entered guilty pleas on the first day of his scheduled trial in May. His admissions included:
- Four counts of sexual assault against one victim
- Five counts of sexual assault against another victim
- One count of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
- One count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child
In addition to these admissions, Godfrey pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, three counts of causing or inciting the sexual exploitation of a child, and possession of extreme pornography.
Sentencing and Registration
The Leeds Crown Court handed down a 12-year custodial sentence, supplemented by an extended licence period of four years and six months. Upon release, Godfrey will be subject to a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order, severely restricting his contact with children. He is also required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
Ongoing Safeguarding Commitment
Detective Constable Smith added: "Godfrey is a dangerous individual who has been held accountable for the harm he has caused to children. I would also like to recognise the vital family support they have received."
Godfrey will now serve his sentence at an undisclosed correctional facility. The Sexual Harm Prevention Order will remain in effect indefinitely upon his release, with conditions likely to include restrictions on unsupervised contact with minors and requirements to notify authorities of any changes in personal circumstances.
West Yorkshire Police continue to encourage any victims of sexual abuse to come forward, regardless of when the offences occurred. The Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit remains committed to investigating such cases thoroughly and supporting victims throughout the legal process.
