A harrowing homicide investigation in the Greek capital has culminated in the custody of a 26-year-old Afghan national, following the tragic discovery of 38-year-old Scottish volunteer Elisabeth-Jane Ross inside a travel bag at a derelict property on Evelpidon Street. The suspect, currently held on charges of intentional homicide, robbery, and weapons violations, reportedly admitted under interrogation to placing the body inside the suitcase and hauling it across town to the abandoned Kypseli site.
Investigators with the Hellenic Police homicide division, working alongside Police Scotland and Interpol, unravelled a trail of digital evidence and surveillance footage. Closed-circuit cameras captured the suspect transferring a heavy suitcase from an Exarchia apartment on the evening of July 16, before leaving the scene carrying only a backpack. Critical testimony came from the suspect's wife, who disclosed that location-tracking data placed her husband inside the Exarchia property overnight. Suspecting his involvement after public appeals, she fled with their child and handed over a mobile device alongside €2,550 in cash to authorities.
Following the victim's passing, misleading text messages were sent from her phone to family members in Edinburgh, attempting to buy time by claiming she needed space to be alone. A raid on the suspect’s residence yielded a replica handgun and a military knife, while forensic officers confirmed that bank cards belonging to the victim had been used for unauthorized cash withdrawals across Athens.
The Scottish volunteer, remembered warmly by friends and relatives as a kind-hearted soul who frequently assisted charities and local populations, had arrived in Greece in late June. A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated to journalists that officers are providing dedicated support to her family while maintaining active liaison with Greek authorities.
