An investigation by the West Midlands Police has culminated in prison sentences for three individuals behind a targeted midnight ambush and an audacious £8,000 extortion plot. Harpreet Singh, 21, of Arden Road, Smethwick; Harman Ram, 21, of Grove Lane, Lozells; and Mashood Ahmed, 20, of Holiday Road, Soho, each received a sentence of three years and four months at Wolverhampton Crown Court. The trio appeared before His Honour Judge Gosling on June 24, 2026, where they all entered guilty pleas to charges of blackmail and assault.

The gravity of the case, reported extensively by Daily Dazzling Dawn, centers on an incident that unfolded at approximately 1:45 AM on September 16 last year. A 20-year-old man was walking through West Smethwick Park when he was abruptly intercepted, restrained, and subjected to a violent physical assault by the defendants.

While holding the victim captive, the attackers launched a high-stakes extortion attempt. They placed emergency demands to his terrified relatives, ordering an immediate bank transfer of £8,000. The criminals explicitly claimed they were armed and threatened to inflict severe physical harm on the victim if the money was not paid.

A swift 999 emergency call alerted police handlers to the ongoing crisis, mobilizing specialized units for an overnight tracking operation. Just before 6:00 AM the following morning, an armed response team successfully identified and intercepted the suspects' vehicle on Holly Lane, Smethwick. Officers discovered the victim inside the car along with his captors. During the arrests, officers heard an object hit the ground and subsequently recovered a discarded lock knife from the scene.

Detective Constable Emma Simpson, who led the comprehensive investigation, spoke to journalists regarding the profound psychological toll the incident left on the family. She noted that while the victim was fortunately spared from serious physical injuries, the ordeal was exceptionally terrifying for both him and his relatives. She expressed satisfaction that the coordinated efforts of the initial response officers and the specialized investigative teams ensured all three men were brought to justice and placed behind bars.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police further detailed to journalists that the swift tactical interception by armed units effectively brought a dangerous, volatile situation to a safe conclusion before the extortion attempt could escalate further. The comprehensive convictions and immediate custodial sentences close a major case for regional detectives, who are continuing to collaborate with local council authorities to review overnight safety and public monitoring measures across Smethwick’s public parks.
