Sixth Suspect Charged with Murder in Suhail Choudry Case as Inquiry Widens

Waseem Islam, 39, faces court today following a breakthrough in the Keighley investigation, bringing the total number of murder defendants to six.

A significant shift in the pursuit of justice for Suhail Choudry occurred today as West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the man arrested yesterday has now been formally charged with murder.

Waseem Islam, 39, of East Avenue, Keighley, is scheduled to appear at Bradford Magistrates’ Court later today. His charging marks a critical expansion of the case, which began following the fatal assault of 35-year-old Suhail Choudry on 8 February. Mr Choudry tragically passed away from head injuries on 11 February, leaving a grieving widow and three children. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) have remained steadfast in their assertion that the investigation remains active, with this latest charge reinforcing the scale of the coordinated attack.

Links Between Suspect and Victim

Questions regarding the relationship between the accused and the victim have become a focal point of the investigation. While official police statements have not yet detailed a specific motive, the address of the newly charged Waseem Islam—East Avenue—is of significant investigative interest. This location is situated in close proximity to the Flasby Street area where the fatal assault took place. While it is not yet confirmed in open court if Waseem Islam was personally known to Mr Choudry prior to the incident, the geographical links suggest a localized nature to the events of 8 February. Legal experts suggest that any prior contact between the parties will likely be a central theme when the case reaches trial.

Identity and Background of the Accused

In maintaining professional journalistic standards, it is noted that Waseem Islam belongs to the same local demographic as the other five primary defendants. While his specific citizenship status has not been formally released by the Home Office, he is described within the community as being of South Asian heritage. This alignment with the existing group of defendants—many of whom are from the Keighley area—suggests that the investigation is continuing to focus on a specific network of individuals allegedly involved in the "targeted" pursuit of Mr Choudry.

Judicial Progress and the 2027 Timeline

The addition of Waseem Islam to the list of defendants adds further complexity to the upcoming trial at Bradford Crown Court. Currently, five other men remain in custody: Rashid Hussain and Majid Hussain, who have both pleaded not guilty, and Mohammed Aliyan Khan, Faisal Khan, and Hakeem Gulzar, who are awaiting plea hearings. All six men are now expected to be part of the legal proceedings leading toward the provisional trial date of 25 January 2027.

The court will hold administrative hearings on 14 August 2026 and 5 October 2026 to manage the vast amount of evidence. This includes extensive "digital mapping" from CCTV and doorbell cameras, which detectives are using to track the movements of all parties involved on the night of the attack.

Family Status and Ongoing Impact

The human tragedy continues for Suhail’s widow, Zara, who has navigated the trauma of the investigation alongside the final stages of her pregnancy and the subsequent arrival of their third child. A family representative told a journalist that the family remains "resolute" in their desire for total accountability. Zara has been described as showing "unmatched dignity" as she prepares for a future where her youngest child will only know their father through the memories shared by the Keighley community.

The investigation remains active as Waseem Islam appears in court today, with police continuing to scrutinise the roles of others previously detained.
