A 21-year-old French au pair, Sophie Lionnet, who was brutally abused and killed by her employers, left behind a chilling final message after they became convinced she was involved in a fabricated plot with Boyzone founder Mark Walton.
Sophie had been working as a live-in nanny for Sabrina Kouider, 35, and her partner Ouissem Medouni, 40, at their home in Wimbledon, south-west London. Over the course of 12 days, she suffered severe abuse, including starvation and repeated interrogations.
Originally traveling from France for better work opportunities, her hopes quickly turned into a nightmare before her death in 2017.
Kouider, who previously had a relationship with Walton, believed he was plotting to harm her family and that Sophie was helping him—claims later dismissed in court as entirely baseless. In an attempt to force a confession, Kouider deprived Sophie of food, beat her with an electrical cable causing multiple fractures, and repeatedly submerged her head underwater.
As the abuse escalated, Sophie sustained serious injuries, including fractures to her ribs, jaw, and breastbone. She also became severely malnourished, as seen in videos recorded by the couple.
Warning signs were missed. A nearby restaurant owner recalled Sophie once mentioned being assaulted over a minor mistake, but he did not realize the extent of her suffering.
Sophie had expressed a desire to return home, but investigators later found her passport and return ticket missing. She ultimately drowned in a bathtub. The crime was uncovered after neighbors reported a strong smell of smoke coming from the couple’s garden.
Police discovered her remains burned on a bonfire, while Kouider and Medouni were nearby cooking food. Medouni initially tried to claim the remains were from a sheep.
Inside the home, officers found a heartbreaking note written by Sophie: “Why me? I need help to stop them.”
Kouider later claimed Sophie had left with Walton and said the recorded interrogations were meant as evidence against him. Authorities believe she intended to use the recordings to extort money from Walton.
The couple, who had been together for two years, had previously made numerous false accusations against Walton, including labeling him online as a criminal.
During the trial, Walton testified from Los Angeles, stating he had never met Sophie and describing Kouider’s behavior as unpredictable.
Both Kouider and Medouni were sentenced to life in prison. The judge condemned their actions as cruel and humiliating, emphasizing that nothing could justify their behavior.
Recordings revealed Sophie being verbally abused, compared to a traitor, and expressing fear before being forced to confess. Those who knew her described her as kind, shy, and full of life, having moved to London to improve her English and build a better future.
