Detectives have moved into a critical new phase of a murder investigation following a daylight attack in one of East London’s most prominent British-Bangladeshi and sylheti community hubs.
The Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command is currently scouring CCTV and forensic evidence after a man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, died from stab wounds sustained on Watney Street, E1. While the primary victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital, a second man in his 50s remains under medical care for a non-life-threatening knife wound.
The incident unfolded at approximately 4:00 pm on Tuesday, 7 April, in the heart of the bustling Watney Market area. Witnesses reported a heavy emergency response as London’s Air Ambulance trauma teams arrived by car within two minutes to assist paramedics on the ground. Despite their rapid intervention, the younger victim could not be saved.
A Daily Dazzling reporter reached out to Councillor Abu Talha Chowdhury, the Cabinet Member for Safer Communities in Tower Hamlets, at 11:30 am today. The Councillor stated that, based on current information, the identity of victims not confirmed yet.He added that the investigation is ongoing.
However, the Daily Dazzling Dawn has verified that the victim is not of Bangladeshi origin.
The focus of the investigation has now shifted to the unidentified assailant who remains at large. No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the double stabbing has not yet been established. Specialist officers are working to formally identify the deceased and notify his next of kin, while local patrols have been increased to reassure residents in this densely populated corner of Tower Hamlets.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams told journalists that his thoughts remain with the victim’s family and those in the community affected by the tragedy. He confirmed that the force is working tirelessly to establish the circumstances and has urged anyone who was in the area, or who possesses dash-cam or CCTV footage, to come forward immediately.
