Police maintain cordons at Beaumont Leys as 33-year-old remains in custody

A 33-year-old man remains in police custody this morning as detectives intensify their investigation into the death of a 62-year-old found in a park behind a Leicester supermarket, Daily Dazzling Dawn confirmed.

The focus of the investigation remains centered on a cordoned-off section of Beaumont Leys Park, located strategically between Krefeld Way and Beaumont Way. Specialist forensic teams have been deployed to the scene behind the local Tesco store following the discovery of an unconscious man shortly before 7:00 pm on Monday evening, April 6. Despite the rapid response from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and subsequent hospital treatment, the victim was pronounced dead, triggering an immediate shift to a homicide inquiry.

Details of the Custody and Victim Support-The 33-year-old suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident and is currently being interrogated by the East Midlands Murder Investigation Team. While the identity of the 62-year-old victim has not yet been released to the public, police confirmed that his next of kin have been formally identified. These family members are currently receiving assistance from specialist liaison officers as they navigate the initial stages of bereavement and the legal process.

The immediate priority for investigators is the recovery of digital evidence and physical markers within the park. Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, leading the inquiry, emphasized the necessity of public cooperation to piece together the victim’s final movements. "We are in the very early stages of our investigation into the incident and the events leading up to it," he told journalists. He further stressed the importance of community input, stating, "We know it’s not always easy to report what you may have seen or heard but it’s vitally important we speak to as many people as possible."

In the coming 24 to 48 hours, the investigation is expected to move toward a formal post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death. Simultaneously, officers are conducting door-to-door inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding commercial units and transport links. A police spokesperson noted that the area remains sealed off to ensure a thorough examination of the scene and to safeguard any potential forensic evidence that could be pivotal for the prosecution.
