UK snow bomb set to strike ‘half’ of England starting in 30 hours

A new wave of heavy snowfall is forecast to affect large parts of the UK, with around half of England expected to be hit by a so-called “snow bomb” starting on Tuesday. While some regions will avoid the wintry conditions, others are likely to see significant snowfall.

Weather models indicate a sharp north–south divide. Areas stretching from northern Scotland—including Wick, John O’Groats and Ullapool—down to Stoke-on-Trent and parts of Staffordshire are forecast to be affected. According to WX Charts, snow is expected to arrive from Tuesday, January 27, with snowfall rates potentially reaching up to 10cm per hour by early evening as temperatures fall.

Met Office forecast maps suggest the first signs of snow could appear as early as 6pm on Monday, January 26, before becoming heavier throughout Tuesday.

Southern England and southern Wales are expected to escape the worst of the conditions. Locations south of Stoke are likely to be spared, including major areas such as Birmingham, Solihull, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Regions most at risk include Staffordshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire. Snow depth forecasts from WX Charts, based on Met Desk data, suggest the heaviest accumulations will occur in Scotland, with up to 72cm possible in the Cairngorms National Park.

Temperatures in these northern areas could drop to around -1°C, while southern England is expected to see milder conditions, with temperatures ranging from -1°C to highs of around 7°C.

Meteorologist James Madden of Exacta Weather shared images of snowfall on Sunday, January 25, stating that his forecast had already begun to materialise. He noted that wintry conditions were already developing across higher ground in Aviemore and the Cairngorms, where heavy snow was falling or had recently settled.
