Post Office issues urgent alert

The Post Office has urged customers to plan ahead if they intend to use its services today (December 8), as December represents the busiest month for sending letters and parcels across the UK and overseas.

With many people preparing to post Christmas gifts to friends and family, and others choosing online shopping over crowded high streets, Post Office branches are experiencing a significant surge in demand. The organisation has issued a warning as shoppers flock to their local branches ahead of Christmas Day.

Monday, 8 December, is expected to be the Post Office’s busiest day of the year. The company predicts that today will see the highest volume of festive parcels and mail being sent from branches nationwide. According to Post Office data, Britons are planning to send 13 per cent more gifts this year compared to last.

Customers are being advised to think ahead and visit their nearest branch as early as possible to ensure presents arrive on time and to avoid last-minute stress, reports the Express. Post Office branches handle shipments through Royal Mail, Parcelforce, Amazon, DPD, DHL and Evri.

Postmaster Arif Matadar shared his thoughts on the festive rush:
“Christmas is one of the most enjoyable times in our Post Offices. Seeing people come in with their parcels and cards, ready to spread joy to loved ones, really highlights our role as a community hub.”

He continued:
“To help customers make the most of the season, there are a few tips I always recommend. Checking final posting dates—especially for international destinations—is essential, as deadlines differ based on location. Writing addresses clearly and including a return address also helps ensure items reach their destination.”

Matadar added that the team is always ready to advise customers on the best delivery options, whether for gifts, cards, or special items. For valuables such as cash or vouchers, he recommends Royal Mail Special Delivery for full tracking and insurance. “If you need guidance, just drop into your local branch—we’re here to make your Christmas posting experience smooth, simple and full of festive spirit,” he said.

Candice Ohandjanian, the Post Office’s mails and parcels director, noted the scale of this year’s holiday season:
“This Christmas is shaping up to be one of the busiest yet, with nearly three-quarters of Brits (74 per cent) planning to buy the same number of gifts—or more—than last year. And when it comes to sending those carefully chosen presents, the local Post Office remains the go-to destination to ensure they arrive safely. Plan ahead, visit your local branch, and enjoy the season knowing your parcels are in safe hands.”
