NLFB Sylhet Inaugurated with Vision for Liver Health and Hepatitis Elimination

The inauguration ceremony of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, Sylhet (NLFB Sylhet) was held on Saturday at the Foundation’s newly constructed premises in East Eidgah, Sylhet. The state-of-the-art facility, built with the Foundation’s own funding on government-allocated land, marks a significant milestone in expanding specialized liver healthcare services in the region.

Chaired by Professor Mohammad Ali, Founder Secretary General of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, the event brought together leading healthcare professionals, government officials, medical students, and representatives from social and health organizations.

Khan Md. Rezaul Nabi, Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet, attended the ceremony as Chief Guest. He lauded the Foundation’s efforts and expressed hope that the newly established center would play a pivotal role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of liver diseases and viral hepatitis in Sylhet and surrounding areas. He emphasized the potential of transforming this facility into a fully-fledged hospital in the near future.

Special guests included Prof. M. Anisur Rahman, former Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at BIRDEM General Hospital; Prof. Dr. Md. Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury, Principal of MAG Osmani Medical College; and a representative from the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Sylhet.

A key highlight of the event was the free Hepatitis B and C screening and Hepatitis B vaccinations provided to all residents of Govt. Shishu Paribar (Girls), Raynagar, reflecting NLFB Sylhet’s commitment to community healthcare.

Prof. Madhusudan Saha, Chairman of NLFB Sylhet and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Sylhet Women’s Medical College, delivered the welcome address. Prof. Syed Alamgir Safwath, Secretary General of NLFB Sylhet and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, outlined the Foundation’s past initiatives and future plans. Dr. Mustak Ahmed, Organizing Secretary of NLFB Sylhet and Associate Professor at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, thanked all contributors and participants for supporting this humanitarian cause.

Mr. Zunaid Murshed Paiker, Chief Executive of the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh, presented a comprehensive overview of the Foundation’s national and international efforts in liver health promotion and hepatitis elimination.

A special souvenir was published to commemorate the occasion, featuring messages from dignitaries and articles contributed by all Executive Committee members of NLFB Sylhet.

The ceremony also featured video messages from global hepatitis leaders, including Mr. Cary James, CEO of the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA), Geneva, and Dr. John Ward, Director of the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination (CGHE), USA. They praised the launch of NLFB Sylhet as a milestone initiative and reaffirmed their support for Bangladesh’s efforts in eliminating viral hepatitis.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Mohammad Ali reiterated the Foundation’s mission to provide affordable liver care and urged the government and Bangladeshi citizens at home and abroad to support the establishment of a modern, specialized liver hospital in Sylhet.

The program was hosted by Dr. Benjamin, with overall coordination managed by Shawkatur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of NLFB Sylhet. The inauguration received wide media attention and was hailed as a progressive step toward better liver healthcare in the country.
