A 23-year-old woman has been arrested in Leicester on suspicion of sending threatening communications via social media regarding a newly approved mosque project. The arrest follows Leicester City Council's decision to grant planning permission for the conversion of the former Glen pub on Hillsborough Road in Eyres Monsell into a place of worship.

Leicestershire Police stated that they are actively monitoring social media platforms after identifying posts that reportedly encourage illegal actions aimed at preventing the mosque development. While acknowledging that the planning decision itself falls outside of police jurisdiction, authorities emphasized that inciting criminal activity is a serious offense.

In response to the controversial decision and the subsequent online threats, Leicestershire Police have increased reassurance patrols in the Eyres Monsell area.

A force spokesperson commented, "A small number of these comments appear to be encouraging or inciting people to engage in criminal activity in order to stop the plans from going ahead. While the discussion relating to the use of the building is not a police matter, it is an offence to encourage or incite people to break the law."

The arrested woman has been released on bail pending further investigation. Police have urged residents with any concerns to approach local officers as reassurance patrols continue in the area.
